The Journey of Master Roody Etienne

From Haiti to the Dominican Republic, Argentina, USA, Guatemala, Canada, and Around the World

Master Roody Etienne was born and raised in Haiti in a hardworking middle-class family. His parents were respected business people who believed strongly in education, discipline, and respect. From an early age, he was taught the importance of responsibility, perseverance, and personal development.

His late mother played a very important role in his life. It was her who first introduced him to martial arts during his youth. Her encouragement and support became the foundation of his lifelong journey in martial arts and Taekwon-Do.

He attended the prestigious Baptist school:

Collège Pratique du Nord

Known for its discipline and strong educational values, the school helped shape his leadership qualities and dedication to excellence.

Artistic Education and Martial Arts Development

Between 1992 and 1994, Roody Etienne attended:

École Nationale des Beaux-Arts

There, he studied fine arts and artistic development while continuing his martial arts training. His artistic background later influenced his appreciation for precision, balance, discipline, and technical movement within martial arts.

During the early 1990s, he practiced several martial arts systems including:

  • Kyokushin Karate-Do 
  • World Taekwondo 
  • Kendo 
  • International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) 

Dominican Republic — Kendo and International Experience (1994–1996)

From 1994 to 1996, Master Etienne traveled to the Dominican Republic where he practiced:

He trained under the martial arts school of the late:

Master Francisco Cruz

Training in the Dominican Republic expanded his martial arts experience internationally and exposed him to different fighting philosophies, discipline methods, and cultural traditions.

Caribbean Grand Champion — Santiago, Dominican Republic (1996)

In March 1996, Master Roody Etienne achieved one of the first major victories of his career in:

Santiago de los Caballeros

There, he won the prestigious title:

Caribbean Grand Champion in Combat

This international victory established him as one of the leading international martial artists from Haiti and marked the beginning of his growing reputation throughout the Caribbean martial arts community by defeating three experiences Martial Artists from Taekwon-Do, Kung Fu and Karate.

The championship demonstrated:

  • Technical excellence 
  • Powerful sparring ability 
  • Mental discipline 
  • International-level competition skills 

Meeting Master Dr. Andy Mencia — Santo Domingo (2000)

A major turning point in his martial arts journey came during the summer of 2000 at an International Taekwon-Do Tournament in:

There, Master Etienne was introduced to:

The introduction was made by his colleague:

Master Juan Tomas Martinez

Master Dr. Andy Mencia immediately recognized Roody Etienne’s dedication, technical ability, leadership qualities, and passion for ITF Taekwon-Do.

With the advice, mentorship, and full support of Master Dr. Andy Mencia, Roody Etienne returned to Haiti with a clear mission:

Reviving ITF Taekwon-Do in Haiti

At that time, ITF Taekwon-Do activity in Haiti had become inactive and unorganized for many years.

With determination and international support, Master Etienne worked tirelessly to rebuild the ITF structure in Haiti. His efforts included:

  • Organizing instructors 
  • Developing schools 
  • Conducting seminars 
  • Promoting international certification 
  • Building national representation 
  • Reconnecting Haiti to the international ITF community 

Through his leadership and perseverance, he founded:

The first legally recognized ITF Organization in Haiti

This achievement became one of the most important contributions of his career to Haitian martial arts history.

He later became recognized internationally as:

Founder and President of the Haitian International Taekwon-Do Federation

International Competitor and Representative

Following his success in the Caribbean and Haiti, Master Etienne represented Haiti internationally in many countries including:

  • Dominican Republic 
  • United States 
  • Argentina 
  • Guatemala 
  • Australia 
  • Canada 
  • Italy 
  • Mexico 
  • Brazil 
  • Korea
    and many others. 

His international achievements included:

  

· Caribbean Grand Champion in Combat - Dominican     Republic (1996)

  • Gold Medal in Power Breaking - Argentina (2004) 
  • Gold Medal in Sparring - USA Championship (2005) 
  • Head of Haitian Delegation - ITF World Championship in Australia (2005) 
  • Bronze Medal in Patterns - Guatemala (2006) 
  • Silver Medal in Power Breaking - Guatemala (2006) 
  • Gold Medal in Sparring - Red Tiger Championship, Philadelphia (2007)
  • Silver and two Bronze in      Sparing, Patterns and Power Breaking - Canada (2016)
  • Gold and Silver in Power Breaking and Patterns - Canada (2017)

Canada — A New Chapter (2007)

In July 2007, Master Etienne immigrated to Canada and later settled in Ottawa, Ontario.

While studying machining and prototype technology at La Cité Collégiale, he continued teaching Taekwon-Do and developing his vision for a martial arts academy focused on education, discipline, and community leadership.

Founding of Etienne’s International Taekwon-Do Academy (2009)

In Summer 2009, he founded:

Etienne’s International Taekwon-Do Academy

The academy was created to:

  • Teach authentic ITF Taekwon-Do 
  • Empower youth 
  • Build confidence 
  • Promote respect and discipline 
  • Support families and communities 

Over the years, the academy became recognized for its commitment to traditional martial arts values and community service.

International Recognition and Legacy

After more than four decades of dedication to martial arts, Master Roody Etienne became internationally recognized as:

7th Degree Black Belt Master in ITF Taekwon-Do

Today, he continues:

  • Teaching students 
  • Organizing seminars 
  • Coaching athletes 
  • Supporting Haiti’s Taekwon-Do development 
  • Promoting ITF values internationally 

From Haiti to the Dominican Republic, Canada, Australia, the Americas, and many countries around the world, the journey of Master Roody Etienne represents determination, leadership, discipline, and lifelong dedication to the martial arts.
